Why Does My C5 Corvette ABS Lights Stay On?

If your C5 Corvette ABS light stays on, you’re not alone. This is one of the most common electrical issues C5 owners face — especially as these cars age.

The good news? In most cases, it’s a fairly simple fix.

Let’s break down what causes it, how serious it is, and what you can do next.

What the ABS Light Means on a C5 Corvette

When the ABS (Anti-Lock Braking System) light stays illuminated, your car’s brake control module has detected a fault.

On a C5 Corvette, the ABS system is controlled by the Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM), which is attached to the ABS pump assembly.

When the light comes on, the system disables anti-lock braking and traction control, active handling (stability control,) and traction control.

You may also see:
- Traction Control light
- “Service Active Handling” message
- Brake light illuminated
- Speedometer acting erratically
- No communication with ABS module when scanning

Most Common Reasons Your C5 ABS Light Stays On

1. Failed ABS Control Module (Most Common)

This is by far the number one cause.

Over time, heat and vibration cause these poorly manufactured modules to fail. When this happens:

- Communication codes appear (C1214, c1242, C1248, c1255 etc.)
- ABS and traction control stop working
- The light stays on permanently

The pump itself is usually fine — it’s the electronics that fail.

This is extremely common on 2001–2004 Corvettes. Start here to get your ABS Control Module repaired and get your Corvette back on the road with the proper braking functions restored.

2. Wheel Speed Sensor Failure

Each wheel has a speed sensor that feeds data to the ABS system.

If one fails or becomes contaminated with debris:
- The ABS light can trigger
- Traction control may disable
- You may get intermittent warnings

However, this is less common than module failure on C5 models.

3. Wiring or Ground Issues

Corrosion, damaged wiring, or poor grounds can cause signal loss between:
- Wheel sensors
- ABS module
- PCM

This is more likely if the car has had prior brake work or accident damage.

4. Low Brake Fluid or Hydraulic Issue

While less common, low brake fluid or internal pump issues can also trigger warning lights.

But statistically, on a C5 Corvette, it’s usually the module.

Can You Drive With the ABS Light On?

Yes — but cautiously, and only for a short period of time.

When the ABS light stays on:
- Anti-lock braking is disabled
- Traction control is disabled
- Active handling may not function

Your standard braking still works, but in wet or emergency conditions you lose stability assistance. Your C5 was built to have these electronic functions working at all times, and not having them is a critical issue that needs to be addressed immediately for safety.

How to Properly Diagnose the Problem

You need a scan tool capable of reading ABS-specific codes.

A generic OBD2 scanner will not read EBCM codes.

Look for:
- Communication codes
- Wheel speed sensor codes
- Internal module failure codes

If you see communication errors or internal faults, it’s almost certainly the module.

The solution: Rebuild or replace the EBCM.

Our rebuild service:

- Repairs the failed internal components
- Restores communication
- Eliminates warning lights
- Does not require programming
- Keeps your original VIN-coded module

If your C5 Corvette ABS light stays on, this is usually the most cost-effective permanent fix.

How to Remove the C5 ABS Module

Good news: You do not need to remove brake lines.

The electronic module detaches from the pump with 6 T20 Torx screws.

Basic steps:
1. Disconnect battery
2. Remove air intake ducting
3. Unplug electrical connector
4. Remove 6 module screws
5. Carefully separate module from pump

Turnaround for our mail-in rebuilds is typically just a few days.

Final Thoughts

If your C5 Corvette ABS light won’t turn off, the odds strongly favor internal EBCM failure.

It’s not uncommon.
It’s not catastrophic.
And it’s usually repairable.

Ignoring it means:
- No traction control
- No active handling
- Reduced braking safety in emergencies

Fixing it restores your Corvette to how it was meant to drive.
